2022 Awards – Most Passionate About Coffee

A flat white, with some lovely latte art, served in a classic white cup at Sam's Coffee in Llangollen.Welcome to the next Coffee Spot Awards Shortlist for 2022, the “Most Passionate About Coffee” Award, which was won in 2021 by Sam’s Coffee. For me, this is one of the most important awards, and also one of the hardest to judge, which is why I’ve left it to the last day.

It’s not just about the coffee, it’s also about people who love and care about coffee. Everyone who I’ve covered in the Coffee Spot is passionate about coffee and one of the great things is how much love there is out there, both for the coffee and for those who make it. However, those shortlisted for this award stand out from the crowd.

You can see the shortlist after the gallery.

There are eight Coffee Spots on the shortlist this year, all listed in order of publication.

I described The Penny Drop on London‘s Tottenham Street as a throw-back to the sort of coffee shop that I remember in the capital 10 years ago. It’s a multi-roaster of the sort that rarely exists in London these days, a place where the coffee is front and centre. The Penny Drop has also been shortlisted for this year’s Best Cake and Best Espresso Awards.

Doing what it says on the window: Meier’s – Vietnamese Specialty CoffeeMeier’s – Vietnamese Specialty Coffee

From one capital to another, Berlin‘s Meier’s – Vietnamese Specialty Coffee does exactly what the name suggests, bring Vietnamese speciality coffee to the German capital. The coffee in question is exclusively in Vietnamese-grown Arabica coffee, roasted for Meier’s by Là Việt, a coffee shop/roaster in the Dalat coffee-growing region of Vietnam, who then air-freights it to Berlin. Meier’s has also been shortlisted for the Best Filter Coffee Award.

Blooming Skull Coffee is a takeway only coffee and plant shop in Bebington on The Wirral. What makes Blooming Skull stand out from the crowd is the dedication to the quality of the coffee, with the Penny Rock seasonal single-origin from Red Bank on espresso and a guest roaster (drawn from some of the country’s best roasters) on batch brew. Blooming Skull is also on the Best Neighbourhood Coffee Spot and Best Takeaway Coffee shortlists.

COFFI, on Pilgrim Street in Liverpool, occupying an old, two-storey brick-built coach house.COFFI

Just across the Mersey from Blooming Skull is Liverpool‘s COFFI. This is another multi-roaster, this time drawing on the best roasters from around Europe. COFFI puts the coffee front and centre in its minimalist coffee shop in a lovely old coach house on a cobbled street near the Anglican Cathedral COFFI has also been shortlisted for the Smallest Coffee Spot Award.

Moving back to Germany, but this time to Mainz, we have the city’s specilaity coffee pioneers, Kaffeekommune. Kaffeekommune is the only coffee shop/roaster on this year’s shortlist and it’s Koffeekommune’s uncompromising drive to bring the best coffee to Mainz that sees it on this shortlist. Koffeekommune has also been shortlisted for the Smallest Coffee Spot and Best Espresso Awards.

Next we go to San Francisco and The Coffee Movement, another multi-roaster which has also been shortlisted for the Happiest Staff Award. The Coffee Movement is another multi-roaster, the coffee drawn from around the USA and beyond. There are three choices at any one time with the best feature being the tasting flights, where you can try all three coffees (filter) or one coffee as espresso, piccolo and filter.

At the other end of the scale is Tuesday Coffee + Shoppe in Marietta, Georgia. The only single-roaster coffee shop on the shortlist, with the coffee coming from local roasters, Bellwood Coffee, the desire of owner Andrew and his staff to bring great coffee to Marietta shines through everything they do. Tuesday Coffee + Shoppe is also on the Smallest Coffee Spot and Most Unlikely Place to Find a Coffee Spot shortlists.

Our final entry is Shrewsbury’s Nomad Coffee Co., another multi-roaster where the coffee is front and centre. In this case, owners Vladimir and Raúl (who is also head barista) only serve single-origin on espresso, a bold move in a relatively small coffee market like Shrewsbury. Nomad Coffee Co. has also been shortlisted for the Smallest Coffee Spot Award.

The winner will be announced on Monday, 2nd January. In the meantime, don’t forget to check out the other 19 Coffee Spot Awards for 2022.
